If there is a common hard disk between multiple PC’s at your home or small office and when you need to transfer data you do it using a pen drive. You might wish at that time, why not access the external drive on the local server. Many times it also happens at home that you have to keep an external hard drive with your notebook. While if you have a basic printer and want to take a printout then you first connect it through a USB cable to your notebook or desktop and then get the print
In the market, while you will get a basic printer for about Rs.2,000 – 2,500, you’ll have to pay around Rs.8,000 for a Wi-Fi printer. While you’ll get a 500GB basic external hard drive for about Rs.3,000 – 3,500, you’ll get a wireless hard drive for about Rs.10,000.
But now you don’t need to upgrade your devices. You can connect a basic external hard drive or printer wirelessly. For this you’ll need a NAS Adapter and Wi-Fi router. If you already have a Wi-Fi router you only need to buy a NAS Adapter. With NAS (Network Attached Storage) you can access devices wirelessly on local network.
You will get a wireless adapter for approximately Rs.2,000 – 2,500 in the market. Some companies like Addonics, SimpleNET and Patriot make small NAS adapter devices for home–office. Three types of NAS adapters are available in the market:
- That have only one USB port and only external hard disk can b accessed
- That have two USB ports, for external hard disk and printer
- That have multiple ports and alongside external hard disk you can also access 15 – 16 pen-drives on the local network. But it doesn't have the option for printer.
NAS adapter needs to be connected to the Wi-Fi router and after that you can attach the external hard disk to it through the USB port. NAS adapter automatically detects the IP address. If you want you can also make the external hard drive password protected. You can also create separate user ID’s.
Now you can easily access external hard disks and printers without attaching them to you PC.
